Bergen Museum to Host Exhibit Celebrating Women’s History Month and New Jersey Women Artists

March 6th through April 28
The Bergen Museum Of Art & Science will exhibit selected works of women artists in recognition of Women’s History Month. The exhibit will be available to the public from March 6 through April 28. An Opening Reception for this exhibit will be held on March 6 from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM in the Main Gallery. Winner of dozens of competitions and scholarships, Dagan has performed widely in Israel and the United States, in concert as well as broadcast. Dagan began her career as a pianist at the age of two. She received a master’s degree as a soloist from the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University. She then received a scholarship to study with Madame Kaboush at Julliard. Her interest in artistic expression spills over into different mediums including painting, drawing and sculpting. She frequently integrates her music and art.

Natalia Kolodzei the Bergen Museum’s curator said this about the exhibit “the Bergen Museum is pleased to host an exhibit of works by women artists that live in New Jersey. This exhibit is part of our commitment to provide opportunities for local and regional artists to have their creative talents and skills be seen and recognized.” Kolodzei continued “the Bergen Museum will continue to create opportunities for artists throughout New Jersey to exhibit their works. For example, the Museum will host the 3rd Annual “Bergen Music & Art Festival” © later this year and will seek artists from all areas of New Jersey to show and sell their original art and to perform.”
Peter Knipe, President of the Bergen Museum, said “the Bergen Museum is happy to produce and host an exhibit of the works of such talented women artists. Before the exhibit has even opened we are receiving calls from schools, Girl Scout troops and women’s organizations asking to arrange group visits to this exhibition.” Knipe went on to say “We are committed to creating and maintaining a “World Class” venue for the fine arts, performing arts and science education right here in New Jersey. We are creating a venue with exhibits and programs that residents from all of New Jersey and yes even New York City come to.”

Miniature Specialist and Artist Jim Bohan
To Receive Film Studio “Building Fund” Gift
The Bergen Museum will host a reception for local artist and retired toy designer Jim Bohan. It will be held in the Main Gallery on the Lower Promenade of the Bergen Mall, Route 4 East and Forest Ave. Paramus, NJ. Jim Bohan will receive a generous gift on behalf of the Museum from Mr. Fred Jones of the Piscataway Chapter of Telcordia Pioneers, an affiliation of Telecom Pioneers. The funds will be used to initiate the building of a replica of the first silent film studio which graced the shores of Fort Lee at the turn of the last century.

The Museum will host an exhibit of Mr. Bohan’s artwork and carvings from June 13th through August 15th. Joe Civitarese will also participate in the exhibit with a grouping of his pastels. Mr. Civitarese worked with Jim Bohan on the dollhouse exhibit’s restorations. It consists of a 19th Century manor house and row of shops. The dollhouses were built by Mr. & Mrs. Leeder of Ridgefield, New Jersey and donated to the Museum by the family.
Many talented volunteers contributed their time to assist Jim in assembling and redecorating the dollhouses, taking great pains to be true to the time period. The Silent Film Studio project will be just as detailed in its design to scale. These efforts are coordinated by Trustee, Terri O’Keefe,” said Museum President Peter Knipe.

The volunteers on the doll house project included Jim Bohan, who redesigned and completely renovated the shops and row houses including the repair of the main plantation house; Joseph Civitarese who designed and constructed a platform for mobility; other volunteers include Larry Handloser, lighting and construction; room decorators Cynthia Summer, Diana Massar and Barbara Robbins. “This exhibit will demonstrate the accessibility of current digital technology to virtually everyone. Inherent in this premise is the ability of the artist to create what was impossible, using technology that makes it possible”, stated Howard Berelson, who is coordinating the exhibit on behalf of the Museum.
The Museum has partnered with Fairleigh Dickinson University and the student interns of the Art and Communication Department to produce an interactive DVD of the digital exhibition. It is available for viewing during the exhibit in a screening room within the galleries. The voices of each individual artist explaining his or her work, process, inspiration and technical background are part of the DVD.
